Taught by TCM’s Curator of Education, Quala-Lynn Young; $20 ($15 TCM Members); Reservations required: (808) 237-5217 or qyoung@tcmhi.org

Take a summer break from email and treat someone special to a handmade origami card. This unique summer workshop is open to all ages, keiki and adults alike. Three different origami models will be taught from the very simple sailboat, to the low-intermediate twist fish, to the more challenging butterfly. Learn at you’re your level and then create unique note cards with beautiful handmade papers.

Capturing Nature Two-day Workshop for keiki 7-12 - July 16 & 17, 1-3 p.m.; Taught by 20/21 artist Jaisy Hanlon; $35 ($30 TCM Members) Reservations required: (808) 237-5217 or qyoung@tcmhi.org

The natural world has been a tremendous source of inspiration (and information) to artists for centuries. This workshop will introduce simple methods of observing and rendering plant life. Students will create line drawings and wire models that capture their subject in a traditional manner. These techniques establish good drawing skills and can later be applied to any subject matter. On the last day, students will have an opportunity to “install” their wire sculpture on the property to be photographed in a natural setting. This workshop is inspired by the current exhibition of botanical woodcarvings by Yoshihiro Suda. For children 7-12. Reservations required.

Wearable Art 3-Day Workshop for Kids 6-12 – With Artist Wendy Rosen, July 20, 22, 24, 1-3 p.m. $50 ($45 TCM Members) Reservations required: (808) 237-5217 or qyoung@tcmhi.org.

This fun and exciting summer art workshop for kids 6-12 gives children the opportunity to learn fabric painting, printings, and dyeing to design their own clothing and beach totes. Artist Wendy Rosen teaches all three classes, which are held over a five-day period on July 20, 22, and 24 from 1 to 3 p.m. at TCM. Day One: Sun Printed Bandanas – Explore our gardens for leaves and flowers, then use our Hawaiian sunshine to sun print an original bandana. Day Two: Rainbow Tie-dyed T-shirts – Learn the folding and dyeing techniques needed to create a Hawaiian rainbow-colored T-shirt.; Day Three: Sponge Painted Tote Bags – Create your own beach tote by printing with natural sea sponges and paint. Reservations are required and may be made by calling (808) 237-5217 or by email at qyoung@tcmhi.org. Supply fee for the three-day workshop is $50 ($45 for TCM Members).

Schaefer Portrait Challenge – on view through September 11 at TCM at FHC:

The Schaefer Portrait Challenge was first held in 2003 in Maui. The triennial exhibition was inspired by the acclaimed Archibald Prize portrait competition held in Australia. The exhibition was organized and presented by the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and has become a showcase of outstanding Hawaii artists and a chronicle of the changing face of Hawaii. The selected portraits include a broad range of interpretation and styles—from representational to experimental in drawing, painting, and sculpture—all of which reveal the rewards of observation and the essence of human connections. Portrait subjects include people of all ages who represent the multicultural profile of Hawaii and their compelling stories, seen through the artists’ portrayals.
