Programs at TCM
The Contemporary Museum’s schedule of
July programs and special offers include
ArtSpree (TCM’s popular annual
open house), gallery talks, summer art
classes for kids, military family outreach,
docent-guided tours, and a special free
offer for twenty-somethings. Most programs
are free with museum entry and feature
artists and special guest art educators.
Public programs are as follows:

FREE COMMUNITY DAY -
July 11, 2009, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
ArtSpree; FREE!
The Contemporary Museum’s
Expression Sessions will not be held
on the first Saturday of July as usual
–come to ArtSpree
instead on Saturday, July 11. ArtSpree
is TCM’s yearly open house—a full
day of art activities, music in the
galleries, storytelling on the lawn,
mermaids in the swimming pool, and fun for
the whole family. Park at Punahou School and
ride the free continuous shuttle up the hill
to TCM’s Makiki Heights campus. Entry is
free for everyone. ArtSpree
2009 is presented by the Friends of TCM and
sponsored by Tori Keegan and Bill Lum.

July 11 is opening day for
Yoshihiro Suda on view in the TCM
Makiki Heights galleries, and
Overlook: Michael Arcega, a
site-specific project of arboreal sculpture
in the gardens. Entertaining this year will
be storyteller Wally Amos, Shakti Dance
Movement, Mermaids Hawaii, Giinko Marischino,
On the Spot Comedy Improv, Samadhi aerial
acrobats, Loco Moco the unicycling juggler,
Youth Speaks slam poetry, ukulele duo TJ and
Micah, Les Peetz and Rachel Gonzales, Randy
Ruff on piano, Intrepid n’Company hip hop
dancers…and much, much more. Art activities
include sculpture clay play with Erin Yuasa
and Daven Hee; face painting with Chinese
opera face painter Hui-Mei Chang; Bizarre
floating and gliding gadgets with Professor
Grandpoli; recycled sculpture with Shanda
Freitas; flower circles with Roy Otaguro;
and a large scale mural project with ‘Iolani

Take a summer break from email and treat
someone special to a handmade origami card.
This unique summer workshop is open to
all ages, keiki and adults alike. Three
different origami models will be taught from
the very simple sailboat, to the
low-intermediate twist fish, to the more
challenging butterfly. Learn at you’re your
level and then create unique note cards with
beautiful handmade papers.
Capturing Nature Two-day Workshop for
keiki 7-12 - July 16 & 17, 1-3 p.m.;

The natural world has been a tremendous
source of inspiration (and information) to
artists for centuries. This workshop will
introduce simple methods of observing and
rendering plant life. Students will create
line drawings and wire models that capture
their subject in a traditional manner. These
techniques establish good drawing skills and
can later be applied to any subject matter.
On the last day, students will have an
opportunity to “install” their wire
sculpture on the property to be photographed
in a natural setting. This workshop is
inspired by the current exhibition of
botanical woodcarvings by Yoshihiro Suda.

Wearable Art 3-Day Workshop for Kids 6-12
– With Artist Wendy Rosen, July 20, 22, 24,
1-3 p.m. $50 ($45 TCM Members) Reservations

This fun and exciting summer art workshop
for kids 6-12 gives children the opportunity
to learn fabric painting, printings, and
dyeing to design their own clothing and
beach totes. Artist Wendy Rosen teaches all
three classes, which are held over a
five-day period on July 20, 22, and 24 from
1 to 3 p.m. at TCM. Day One: Sun Printed
Bandanas – Explore our gardens for
leaves and flowers, then use our Hawaiian
sunshine to sun print an original bandana.
Day Two: Rainbow Tie-dyed T-shirts –
Learn the folding and dyeing techniques
needed to create a Hawaiian rainbow-colored
T-shirt.; Day Three: Sponge Painted Tote
Bags – Create your own beach tote by
printing with natural sea sponges and paint.

Contemporary Japanese Artists, with John
Szostak, Ph.D.; Reservations recommended

Dr. John Szostak is the Assistant
Professor of Japanese Art History at the
University of Hawaii at Manoa. He will
lecture in the galleries on Contemporary
Japanese Artists, including the work of
Yoshihiro Suda. Suda’s work will be on view
in the galleries. This program is free with

SPECIAL OFFERS:
Military Family Outreach at TCM – Free
Entry for Military – sponsored in part by
BAE Systems & BOUTIKI
This special outreach program honors the
sacrifices and service of our retired,
reserve and active duty military members and
their families. With military ID, military
members and their families will be admitted
free of charge throughout the year. This
program is ongoing throughout 2009. This
outreach is made possible by support from
BAE Systems, the premier global defense,
security, and aerospace company, and
BOUTIKI, a not-for-profit, volunteer-run
gift shop located on the Pearl Harbor Navy
Base.
Twenty x 20 – Free Entry for Twenty-somethings
For anyone 20-29 with ID, TCM offers free
entry through September 30, 2009. Created as
a special outreach for the young at art,
this program is offered in honor of the
museum’s 20th anniversary year. The
program is sponsored in part by CONTRAST
Magazine.

Tuesdays-Sundays at 1:30 p.m. -
Docent-Guided Gallery Tours
No reservations are necessary for this
walk-in tour (unless you are bringing a
large group of 10 or more). Led by docents
who have completed TCM’s seven-month docent
training course, this tour offers lively and
interesting discussions about works on view
and current exhibitions in TCM’s Makiki
Heights galleries. Free with museum entry.
Nu’umealani Garden Tours – By

Enjoy docent-guided tours of TCM’s
spectacular “heavenly terraces” first
created by the Rev. K. H. Inagaki between
1928 and 1941. Nu’umealani Garden won the
American Society of Landscape Architects
prestigious Millennium Medallion for
preservation in 2000, and was called a
“cathedral of meditation” by The New York
Times. Stroll the gardens, learn about
the plants, and enjoy the impressive views.
These tours are free with museum entry.
The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian
Center:
July 3, 2009, 7-9 p.m. - First Fridays at
First Hawaiian Center; 7:30 p.m. Artist
Talk with Schaefer Portrait Challenge
artists Stephen Niles, Madeleine Soder,
Wayne Takazono, and Nancy Vilhauer; Free
Start your Chinatown art walkabout at the
First Hawaiian Center, the downtown home of
TCM’s exhibition programs exclusively
featuring Hawaii’s own established and
emerging artists. At 7:30 p.m. a special
program with artists Stephen Niles,
Madeleine Soder, Wayne Takazono, and Nancy
Vilhauer will be presented. The artists will
discuss the trials, tribulations, and
revelations of self-portraiture. Entry is
free and light refreshments are served,
while supplies last.
July 16, 2009 - Noon – FHC Gallery
Talk and Exhibition Tour – Free
These lunch-hour docent-guided tours are
presented at the third Thursdays of every
month, when exhibitions are on view, and are
free for everyone. Meet in the First
Hawaiian Bank lobby at noon. No advance
reservations are necessary. TCM at FHC
exhibitions are always free to the public
and feature the new work of Hawaii’s own
regional artists. FHC exhibitions are
coordinated by Curator of Exhibitions, Inger
Tully.
FHC EXHIBITION:
Schaefer Portrait Challenge –
on view through September 11 at TCM at FHC:
The Schaefer Portrait Challenge
was first held in 2003 in Maui. The
triennial exhibition was inspired by the
acclaimed Archibald Prize portrait
competition held in Australia. The
exhibition was organized and presented by
the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and has
become a showcase of outstanding Hawaii
artists and a chronicle of the changing face
of Hawaii. The selected portraits include a
broad range of interpretation and
styles—from representational to experimental
in drawing, painting, and sculpture—all of
which reveal the rewards of observation and
the essence of human connections. Portrait
subjects include people of all ages who
represent the multicultural profile of
Hawaii and their compelling stories, seen
through the artists’ portrayals.

Heights is $8 General, and $6 Students 13+
and Seniors 62+. Military with ID, Members,
and Children 12 and under are always free.
