August Schedule of Public
Programs at TCM
The Contemporary Museum’s schedule of
August programs and special offers include
the August Moon Wine Tasting,
a new First Friday event at SoHo Mixed Media
Bar, Expression Sessions for kids,
gallery talks, military family outreach,
docent-guided tours, and a special free
offer for twenty-somethings. Most programs
at TCM are free with museum entry and
feature artists and special guest art
educators. Public programs are as follows:
The Contemporary Museum at Makiki
Heights:
Expression Session – August 1, 10:30 a.m.
– Reservations: (808) 237-5230; $12; $7
Members
The Contemporary Museum’s
Expression Sessions (art classes for
kids 5-12) are held on the first Saturday of
every month (except July) from 10:30 a.m. –
Noon. Fees to participate are $12 per
person, ($7 for TCM members). Reservations
are required and may be made by calling
(808) 237-5230 or email education@tcmhi.org.
This month the theme takes a garden and
botanical focus. Be inspired by Japanese
artist Yoshihiro Suda’s wooden flower
carvings on view in the galleries and create
your own beautiful botanical sculptures with
art educator Shanda Freitas. Expression
Sessions through December are sponsored
in memory of Hiram Chung by one of his
family members.
2D: The Art of 2Day - First Friday,
August 7, 2009; 6 p.m.; SoHo Mixed Media
Bar, 80 S. Pauahi Street; No-host Bar (21+

the club SoHo Mixed Media Bar, trendsetting
apparel retailers In4mation, and Contrast
Magazine to present at a First Friday

by urban artist Dalek (James Marshall).
In4mation will print a limited edition
T-shirt and everyone who buys one will score
a one-year free individual membership TCM--Hawaii’s
only museum devoted exclusively to
contemporary art. Artist Dalek made his mark
in the art world with his iconic Space
Monkey character, which looks like a
catatonic, twisted mouse. His current work
is very geometric and reflects his roots in
the subcultures of punk rock, skateboarding
and graffiti. SoHo (www.sohohi.com) is
Chinatown’s newest place to get your
nightclub on and a “cavernous Mecca for art
and music,” according to Honolulu Weekly.
Be there or be square.

FHC EXHIBITION:
Schaefer Portrait Challenge –
on view through September 11 at TCM at FHC:
The Schaefer Portrait Challenge
was first held in 2003 in Maui. The
triennial exhibition was inspired by the
acclaimed Archibald Prize portrait
competition held in Australia. The
exhibition was organized and presented by
the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, and has
become a showcase of outstanding Hawaii
artists and a chronicle of the changing face
of Hawaii. The selected portraits include a
broad range of interpretation and
styles—from representational to experimental
in drawing, painting, and sculpture—all of
which reveal the rewards of observation and
the essence of human connections. Portrait
subjects include people of all ages who
represent the multicultural profile of
Hawaii and their compelling stories, seen
through the artists’ portrayals.
