MUSEUM
SERVICES
Administration
Description – Assist with tasks for various
departments: administrative offices, membership and development,
registrar, public relations, exhibitions, and special events. Duties
include data entry, filing, bulk mailing, creating signage, phone
calls…the possibilities are endless!
Qualifications – Previous office experience,
good attention to detail and proficiency in Pagemaker, Excel, and
Word is helpful. Volunteer should be organized, efficient, comfortable
on the computer, and have flexible space requirements.
Commitment – once a week.
Shifts – flexible and dependable
Contemporary Cafe
Description – The Café is seeking
interns and volunteers for kitchen work. We are a modest café
that serves Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian influence. We are
only open for lunch and serve about 80 guests a day. This is a good
opportunity for someone interested in the food and restaurant industry
to gain experience.
Qualifications and Commitment-
-Available on weekends
-Responsible, Reliable, & Trustworthy
-Basic food knowledge & knife skills
-Aware of sanitation regulations
-Help w/creation of daily specials
Shifts –
Ability to work from 9am to 4:30pm on a volunteer basis -Willingness
to learn
Exhibitions
Description – Assist staff in the de-installation, preparation
and installation of exhibitions. Duties include: sanding, painting,
moving walls and pedestals, and putting up labels. Additional tasks
and responsibilities may vary depending on prior work experience.
Qualifications – Previous gallery experience and/or background
in art and art history is preferred. More important is the desire
to learn more about art and the process involved in exhibiting it
in a Museum.
Exhibitions change every 6-8 weeks. Availability
one or more times during this “take down” period is
helpful.
Sunday 4 – 8 p.m., weekdays 9-12, 1-4 p.m.
Gallery Attendants
Description – Our exhibition sometimes require additional
presence in the galleries. This volunteer provides an important
function, which is to keep a close eye on specific items on exhibit.
Qualifications – Enjoy working in a quiet environment, comfortable
interacting with the public.

Library
Description – The Contemporary Museum Library houses just
under 1,000 volumes. Assist Librarian with the cataloging and organization
of art magazines, catalogs, brochures, newspaper clippings, periodicals,
etc. Other duties include light typing, photocopying, research,
and computer work.
Qualifications – Enjoy working in a quiet environment, researching
topics, and are neat and organized. Previous computer and library
experience is preferred.
Commitment – Once weekly
Shifts – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Museum Shop
Description –Assist Staff with sales and customer relations.
Other duties include: product information, writing up sales slips,
light housekeeping, inventory (as needed), general assistance during
special events, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications – Good interpersonal skills. Previous retail
experience is ideal, but more important is to enjoy people contact
and art, and be comfortable handling money.
Time Commitment – Three hour shift, once a week.
Shifts – Tuesday through Friday 10-1 and 1-4 p.m., Saturday
and Sunday 12-4 p.m.
Special Events
Description – Assist staff in the execution of details involved
in planning a special event. Annual special events include Contempo
(black tie fundraiser) and ArtSpree (community open house). Tasks
may include data entry, creating signage, labels, follow up phone
calls, organizing and packaging items, etc.
Qualifications – Organized, efficient, good attention to detail,
flexible, able to work hard and have fun!
Commitment – Flexible
Shifts – as needed.
Visitor Information Desk
Description –Visitor Information Desk volunteers are representatives
of TCM and must be able to provide up-to-date and accurate information
about TCM exhibitions, grounds, activities, and membership. Responsibilities
include welcoming, greeting, and introducing visitors to galleries
and grounds; promote and process annual memberships, and other tasks
as assigned (bulk mailing, stuffing envelopes, etc.) Must be able
to work independently and enjoy people contact. Training includes
use of the register, processing checks, charges, and annual memberships.

Qualifications – Previous visitor/customer service experience
preferred. Friendly and warm demeanor, enthusiasm for contemporary
art, and willingness to help!

Shifts – Tuesday through Saturday 10 – 1 and 1- 4 p.m.,
Sunday 12 – 2 and 2 – 4 p.m.
Workshop, Expression Session,
and ART pARTies assistants
Description – Assist Education Department in set up of tables
and supplies for these programs. Check participants in, collect
monies and assist instructors with projects conducted for children,
students, and adults. Activities vary depending on the current exhibit,
participant request and artists’ interest. Past activities
include multi-media sculpture, color gels, book illustration, and
ceramics.
Qualifications – Previous experience working with children,
and/or experience in art and education a plus. Must be physically
able to assist in the carrying of tables, chairs, and other supplies.
Time Commitment – Variable
Shifts – Workshops and Art pARTies: approximately
3 hours on weekends. Expression Sessions are held on the first Saturday
each month: 10:30 –12 noon, and 1:30 – 3:00 p.m.
DOCENTS
Docents are volunteers in the Education Department who bring their
diverse backgrounds and talents to enrich visitors’ experience
at TCM through tours of the Museum’s collections and special
exhibitions. New classes are run approximately every two to three
years as needed. Applicants are interviewed by an admissions committee,
and those accepted are required to complete a 6 month training course.
After the initial training period, a minimum average of 2 to 3 tours
per month are required. Docents receive continuing education in
contemporary art and techniques through training sessions, lectures
by curators and artists, and ongoing study. A TCM annual membership
is a pre requisite for joining.
FRIENDS
The purpose of the Friends of The Contemporary Museum is to increase
public awareness and to provide support for The Contemporary Museum.
Friends members work throughout the year planning and implementing
fundraising and community events such as Contempo and ArtSpree.
The Friends offer a variety of special events including walking
tours of Art Galleries and brown bag lunches. Friends membership
is $10 per year. A TCM annual membership is a pre requisite for
joining the Friends.
