ARTIST BRIEF BIOS

Derek Bencomo: Derek Bencomo, a Hawaii resident for over thirty years, has been presented numerous awards from the Hawaiian Craftsman, the Hawai`i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. His pieces belong to public and private collections of the Museum of Arts & Design (New York), the Renwick Gallery of Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Art (Washington D.C.), the Hawaii State Art Museum and Bishop Museum (Honolulu). Bencomo’s art has been exhibited at fine institutions such as the American Crafts Museum in New York, the Minneapolis Institution of Art, the Oakland Museum of Art in California and at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.

Andrew Binkley: Omaha-born Andrew Binkley (b. 1979) attended the Kansas City Art Institute at which he was presented the Outstanding Artist’s Award in 1996. He also was awarded the Grand Prize in Kodak’s Omaha World Herald Photo Contest. Inspired by extensive travel throughout China, Binkley’s art has been exhibited nationally as well as in Shanghai and Beijing, the most recent in 2008 at the Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). His art belongs to collections such as the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center (Makawao), the Buddhist Dharma Center (Omaha), The Jackson Collection (Kansas City) and the Shanghai Zendai MoMA.

Dana Forsberg: received a BFA in Photography from the University of Colorado at Denver. She has exhibited her work at numerous venues, including Denver International Airport, The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center in Honolulu, and the Incheon Art and Cultural Center in Incheon, Korea. Her work has been featured in Korea Daily, Artweek, the Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Magazine, and the Denver Post, among others, and is in private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe.

Karen Gally: A Kauai resident since 1991, Karen Gally (b. 1950) was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Attending institutions such as the Virginia Commonwealth University and Corcoran School of Art (Washington D.C.), Gally’s art belongs to the notable collections of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and Arts and the White House (Washington D.C.). Exhibiting her works at venues such as the Hawaii State Art Museum, the Academy Arts Center at Linekona and Pegge Hopper Gallery (Honolulu), Gally has also authored and been featured in several articles of The Honolulu Advertiser, Garden Island Newspaper and Kauai Magazine.

Jaisy Hanlon: Maui-resident Jaisy Hanlon received a M.F.A. in Metals from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2005 following her completion of studies at the University of Washington where she earned degrees in Metals and Interdisciplinary Visual Arts. Hanlon has exhibited art in New York, Colorado, Washington and Hawaii and belongs numerous private collections as well as the collection of the University of Washington, Fine Arts Building. Hanlon has acted as Adjunct Professor of Art in New York and as an Instructor in the techniques of metalsmithing at the Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center (Makawao).

Keiko Hatano: Keiko Hatano’s work can be found in numerous private collections as well as that of the State Foundation on Culture and Arts and has been exhibited at numerous institutions such as the Brea Gallery (Los Angeles), the Honolulu Academy of Art Center at Linekona and The Contemporary Museum (Honolulu). Hatano is a recipient of awards from the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Windward Artists Guild.

Vince Hazen: Vince Hazen earned a M.F.A. with an Emphasis in Painting and Printmaking (1995). He also attended Anderson University where, in 1990, he received degrees in Biology and Art and was presented the Noffsinger Award. During these years, he was also presented the Mabel Mountain Award in 1993 from the University of Notre Dame. A member of a collaborative collective of artists, A.V. Club of Honolulu, Hazen’s art has been shown in solo and group exhibitions locally, nationally and abroad. Hazen has acted as Associate Professor of Art at Chadron State College (Nebraska), an Artist in Residence and instructor at Windward Community College and is presently the Assistant Curator of Outreach Programs at the Academy Art Center at Linekona (Honolulu).

Lynda Hess: Lynda Hess received a B.A. in Pacific Art History from the University of Hawaii, Manoa and is the recipient of several awards from the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Hess’ art has been exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, in Florence (Italy), New York City, Los Angeles, Albuquerque and throughout Hawaii.

Ryan Higa: Receiving a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Hawaii, Ryan Higa later earned an M.F.A. from University of Michigan in the same discipline in 1998. Higa’s work can be found in the collection of TCM and in private collections in the U.S., Japan and Europe. His art has been featured in exhibitions in Hawai’i and cities such as Seattle, Ann Arbor, Philadelphia and Memphis. Among many accomplishments, Higa has served on the Honolulu Printmakers’ Board of Directors and also was an Instructor at the Academy Art Center at Linekona. He has also been featured in publications such as the Honolulu Weekly, Honolulu Advertiser and Star-Bulletin.
