At 20: Docents' Choice
December 30, 2008 - February 22, 2009

The Contemporary Museum continued to celebrate its 20th anniversary year with a special exhibition of eight masterworks personally selected by eight docents who were in the museum's very first docent training class in 1988.

Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Collections James Jensen approached each docent and asked them to select a favorite work from the collection for display through February 22, 2009. The docents selected for the honor include Allyn Bromley, Marcy Katz, Elizabeth Lacy, Marcia Morse, Susan Shea, Susan Soong, Sharon Twigg-Smith, and Janet Weyenburg.

Artists featured include David Bates, Salomon Heurta, Nathan Oliveira, Thomas Woodruff, William Wiley, Robert Graham, and Richard Tuttle. Each docent wrote a label for their choice explaining why they selected the artwork for display. Some had personal connections to the artist, or were touched or challenged in significant ways by the artwork itself.

January 16, 2008 – February 22, 2009

Hawaii-born in 1922, Toshiko Takaezu, recognized internationally as one of the innovators and masters of contemporary ceramic art, has had a long association with The Contemporary Museum, beginning with an exhibition of her work in 1967 at the Honolulu Advertiser Gallery.  Over the years, many of her works have been donated to TCM.  This exhibition will feature these gifts. In addition, the exhibition will include other Takaezu works from local private collections, which are gifts and promised gifts to TCM in honor of the artist and of the museum’s 20th anniversary.
