Surf Culture: Surf Photography and Board Design in HawaiÎi
February 14 - May 13, 2003

This exhibition at The Contemporary Museum at First Hawaiian Center runs in conjunction with Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing at TCM, Makiki Heights (January 31 ö March 30, 2003). The exhibition features selected works by local surf photographers as well as unique, decorative surfboard designs.

The selection of contemporary surf photographs reveals the art of surfing, featuring the extreme wave; the long barrel; the biggest wipe-out; and the majesty of surf breaks in Hawai`i and beyond. Skilled photographers capture the power and beauty not only of the ocean, but also of the people and communities that create Hawaiiâs "surf culture." Exhibiting artists are Bernie Baker, Warren Bolster, Vince Cavataio, Daren Crawford, Linny Morris Cunningham, Sean Davey, Pete Hodgson, Dave Homcy, Don King, Jon Mozo, Nick Pugay and Mike Waggoner.

The surfboard portion of the exhibition explores contemporary and historic decorative surfboard designs. The artists manipulate their chosen canvases to create artwork reminiscent of classic surf design, yet original and expressive in both concept and execution.
