Daily News: Recent Work by Mari Sakamoto
May 21 ö October 6, 2002

Daily News features paintings and screenprints that reflect observations of human behavior in society. Sakamotoâs subject matter focuses on groups of people engaging in a common activity, such as runners, sunbathers, newborns, golfers, contestants or volleyball players. In these works, crowded surfaces feature anonymous participants÷their faces, body types and clothing indistinguishable from one another. Sakamotoâs works capture the faceless masses as they work, play, exercise, relax or simply wait for something to happen.

Mari Sakamoto was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. She first came to HawaiÎi to study English and to enjoy the sunny weather. While taking art classes at KapiÎolani Community College, she discovered her love of art. She continued her education in art, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of HawaiÎi-Manoa in 1996 and 2001, respectively. Her works have been exhibited at numerous venues in Honolulu, including the Honolulu Printmakers, Honolulu Academy of Arts and The Contemporary Museum CafŽ. She has had prior solo exhibitions at bibelot gallery in Kaimuki and at Borders Books and Music in Ward Center.
