“Foray,”
by the
Department of Public Works

This selection of work by four members of the
Department of Public Works—Evil Genius, Raul Soria,
Kevin Blanchard, and Jared Yamanuha—includes an
eclectic mix of graphic design, illustration,
sculpture, and photography. Evil Genius is fascinated
with the interplay between three and two-dimensional
forms and space in letters and type; Raul Soria is
interested in capturing the energy and essence of live
performances through concert photography; Kevin
Blanchard combines conceptual commercial illustration
with figurative explorations; and Jared Yamanuha uses
photography as a way to “draw” abstract compositions
with light.
The Department of Public Works is a Honolulu-based
creative collective comprised of artists, filmmakers,
designers, musicians, and writers engaged in a myriad
of individual and collaborative projects. In drawing
from the collective experiences of their disparate
backgrounds and mediums, The Department hopes to
advance their work by developing a dialogue and
sharing insight in such a way that would not be
possible individually. The Department currently has
members in Honolulu, California, Arizona, and New
York; this show marks the Department’s second group
exhibition.

Gruntled Funk Mural
Hawaii-born and raised, urban fine artist Ryan Higa
has been commissioned to paint a mural on the exterior
wall of The Contemporary Café at The Contemporary
Museum. The “manga” inspired mural is the first for
Higa and is being completed in conjunction with the
launch of the Gruntled Funk product line. The mural is also
open for public viewing during regular museum hours.

Gruntled
Funk represents a series of works depicting the
strange and humorous world hovering between the cute
and the sinister. The rolling landscape of Gruntled
Funk is populated by a quirky bunch of characters who,
like many of us, struggle constantly to attain that
which they do not have. Many of the characters and
landscapes represent encounters in this Hawai‘i-born
artist’s academic and cultural life experiences.
Higa’s art practice and product line focuses on
whimsical paintings, drawings and sculptures aiming to
keep people smiling, curious and open.
