Standards Implementation
Implementing the State Fine Arts Content Standards into Curriculum Using the Museum As a Resource
The State of Hawai‘i Department of Education developed a set of fine arts content standards for students in grades K-12, to clarify the importance of the fine arts as part of the core curriculum necessary for the education of the whole child. The basic standards are as follows:
1. Students understand and apply art materials, techniques, and processes in creating original artworks based on ideas, experiences, stories, and opinions.
2. Students exhibit visual understanding in their evaluation and use of visual themes, symbols, and metaphors.
3. Students identify, understand and apply the elements and principles of art using the language of the visual arts. The elements of art are: line, shape, form, space, value, texture, color, time, and motion. The principles of art are: emphasis, balance, proportion, pattern, repetition and variation, transition, rhythm, and unity.
4. Students understand the role the visual arts play in the lives of people in past and present cultures.
5. Students reflect upon the meaning, nature and value of one’s own works and the works of others through description, analysis, interpretation, and judgment.
A more complete version of these standards, including their use in grades K-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12 is included in the museum’s education kit, which can be borrowed from TCM by calling the education department, and a complete version of the standards can be obtained from the DOE website (http://www.hcps.k12.hi.us).
