Debra Bloomfield was born in 1952 in Los Angeles, and earned both her BA and MA at San Francisco State University. Bloomfield’s career has spanned three decades and a wide range of work in photography. An educator since 1977, Bloomfield is a distinguished faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute, and has taught at UC-Davis, UC-Berkeley, California State University at Hayward, and the California College of Arts and Crafts.

Bloomfield devotes years to each of her projects, returning repeatedly to the same location, the same perspective, but her images seem to exist beyond ties to specific times and places. Her ongoing exploration of the relationship between internal and external worlds is evident in the Oceanscapes series, a suite of images depicting expansive horizons joining sea and sky. The range of coloration seems to evoke a range of emotional states.
